The small Swiss Alpine town is again playing host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), where the world's top brass in finance and politics convene each year to try to solve the biggest problems that plague our planet. But the long and winding road to Davos offers another lesser-known benefit, which makes the lengthier commute well worth the while. Here's what was overheard on the connecting trains from Zurich Airport to Davos Platz. OpenAI's media representative declined CNBC's request to interview Altman in Davos, citing a "tight" schedule. One Davos attendee noted their company was in the IP space and had just raised this summer, because "the rights issue is so complicated."

☆ Switzerland's glaciers lose a 'mindblowing' volume of ice in just two years

CNN —Glaciers in Switzerland are shrinking at a “mind-blowing” rate. In 2023, the country’s glaciers lost 4% of their total volume, according to data from the Swiss Commission for Cryosphere Observation of the Swiss Academy of Sciences. To put this into perspective, Swiss glaciers have lost as much ice over this two-year period as was lost over the three decades between 1960 and 1990. Matthias Huss/GLAMOSThe two extreme years have led to glacier tongues collapsing and many small glaciers in the country disappearing altogether. Several meters of ice disappeared in southern Valais and the Engadin valley at altitudes of more than 3,200 meters (10,500 feet), according to GLAMOS.

☆ Switzerland detects case of atypical mad cow disease

Brain stem material tested positive for the disease and the case was classified as "atypical", the Paris-based WOAH said. BSE, commonly called mad cow disease, is a fatal disease of the nervous system of cattle. Atypical cases can occur spontaneously in cattle while the classical type is usually caused by the ingestion of contaminated feed. Widespread cases of mad cow disease hit cattle herds in Britain and other European countries in the 1990s. Atypical cases have occasionally been detected and can lead to temporary trade restrictions.
